Trust Your Heart

Look at these two, so happy, so in love…but I was terrified!

Here’s the story…

I got the call a couple of months before their big day.  These two wanted ME to capture their wedding day for them.  They told me it would be a small wedding with just a few of their closest friends and family there.  As honored as I was, I was terrified at the prospect of shooting a wedding, even a small one.  I had done plenty of portraits and family sessions, but never a wedding.  Thoughts rang through my head, and generally not the good ones...What if I miss the big shots, what if the pictures come out blurry, or overexposed, what if, what if, what if…

The fear and negative thoughts continued to fill my head. The more I thought about it, the harder it was to get past them.  Then something amazing happened, I heard my heart screaming at me.  It was telling me, “You know what you’re doing, JUST GO FOR IT!” I had been given an opportunity to make this couple extremely happy and give them something they’d be able to cherish for the rest of their lives.  Was I really going to let fear keep me from telling their story???  No way!  I was not about to let fear win.  I knew in my heart I would do a great job for them.  I needed to do this.  I listened to my heart.

I’m so happy I trusted my heart.  I learned a lot about myself and gained an insane amount of confidence in my ability to tell a story through my pictures.  At the reveal session, they both had tears of joy in their eyes as they relived their special day.  My heart soared when I saw their reaction :-)

Fear is normal, we all experience it from time to time.  The trick is getting past it so you can listen and trust what your heart is telling you.

Until next time, John
